Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (or "SLT") is a type of laser treatment for glaucoma or for those with raised eye pressure.

SLT uses very low energy levels to make the treatment gentle and safer than other alternatives available (SLT is safer than surgery as there is no risk of infection with SLT unlike trabeculectomy or non-penetrating surgery). Specific cells are targeted, leaving untreated portions of the trabecular meshwork (TM) intact (i.e. less injury expected to Schlemm's canal which drains the fluid away from the TM. It is this reason that SLT, unlike other types of laser treatment, may be safely repeated several times.

Typically, SLT lowers eye pressure by 25% at about 5 years. Results can vary, individual responses can be more or less than this, which is important to understand. This infact also applies to all forms of glaucoma treatment such as surgery or drops.
